Reverse Improv Leaves

Hello!

It was a busy weekend of crafting and outings with my mom, sister, and son. We started out with making crescent moon Halloween wreaths, moved on to fall cookie decorating, and ended up at a pumpkin patch the next day.

After we got back yesterday I went ahead and did a quick sewing session. As part of my experiment sewing improv blocks and projects, I decided to use the leftovers/reverse pieces from one of my leaves. The reverse pieces were much smaller so I wasn’t sure it was going to work. Here’s what I ended up with…

On the left is the original block I made and on the right is the reverse block. I’m just as in love with this reverse block as with the original. My mind started trying to figure out if I could do this for each block that I made. I rummaged through the scraps from the project and I’m missing some of the low volume pieces. I tried it again and I feel that this block didn’t turn out as well.

Left is the original block and on the right is the reverse. When I was sewing the curves, I ended up with a pleat in the seam but the another thing happened. The background fabrics weren’t large enough this time when I was trimming down the block. It’s hard to see but the upper right hand section isn’t square. I’m not sure if I’ll continue making reverse blocks even though it’s nice to see the fabric not go to waste. I have 5 more leaf blocks to make to finish a small wall hanging and then I’ll move on to something else.

Happy creating!

  1. A friend just introduced me to your blog. I love your leaves! How fun. As to the one that is not square, how about adding a strip of green (not necessarily matching the greens) to that side so you can square it? That adds another improv twist to the piece.
