Hello!
I’ve been looking at Pinterest. Sometimes it give me FOMO but other times, it pushes me to try things. This was the case with these leaf blocks. I saw a photo of some blocks I loved but the pin didn’t link to anything. Sad face. So I started to figure it out on my own. Here’s the inspiration photo.

I don’t usually use batiks in my sewing and quilting so I don’t have a lot to experiment with. I pulled several large scraps from my scrap box that were batiks but could only find three pieces that were large enough. I grabbed a fourth solid to round out my testers. I tried the technique of stacking the blocks, cutting shapes, and shuffling the pieces to create different blocks.

I found that when I cut four blocks in a stack, they all had the same shapes when sewn together. I didn’t like that they all looked the same. I decided to freehand rotary cut each leaf shape, which takes more time but I’m pleased with the outcome. I used low volume background fabrics and a variety of solids and Essex linen fabrics and I think the leaves turned out well.

They’re kind of addicting and I want to keep making them. I don’t have a lot of low volume fabrics but I’ll see what I can dig up.
Happy Creating!
