Hello!
After my first improv experiment with the birch trees project, I decided to give it another try today. I cut my strips thinner this time and I made more strip sets. It turns out the strip sets were still short so I stacked two strip sets together to make each birch tree taller. I also tried to vary the width of the strips but I wasn’t as successful with that.

This was a fun process. It took me about 30-40 minutes to get the birch trees done. Probably about another 20 minutes to add them into the background.
Things I learned:
- Iron as you go. It was kind of hard to iron the strips after they were put together in the first step.
- Skinny is ok as long as you have enough left for seam allowance.
- Wonky is ok and often makes for more interesting shapes.
- Make more than you think you need. I thought I had cut enough strips but really, I could have cut twice as much and had more to work with.
I can’t wait to get this improv experiment sandwiched with batting and backing so I can get it quilted. I’m contemplating some machine quilting and some big stitch hand quilting to create varied lines.
Happy Creating!
